Your First Therapy Session – A Brave First Step

Reaching out to a psychologist and attending your first session can bring up many different emotions. For most people, it is completely natural to feel nervous, uncertain, or apprehensive. Perhaps you have been thinking about it for a long time. Perhaps it has taken many internal conversations before you finally made the decision. Whatever your experience, it is important to know this: you are not alone, and it is completely natural to feel nervous.

Your first therapy session is an important first step. Often, it is where something begins to shift – not because everything is resolved straight away, but because you choose to take yourself and your inner life seriously. Reaching out for support takes courage. The courage to be honest, to feel, and to make space for what may have been difficult to carry on your own.

A Space to Settle In

Your first session is not about performing, explaining everything perfectly, or having all the right words. Above all, it is about creating a safe space where we can begin to explore together what you are going through and what you need support with. We will work at a pace that feels right for you, with room for silence, uncertainty, and emotions.

Many people find that their nervousness begins to ease when they realise that there are no right or wrong answers – only their own experience. It is not about fixing. It is about understanding.

An Invitation to Prepare

To help you as much as possible in the therapeutic process, I encourage you to write a letter of one to two pages before our first session. The letter could cover:

  • Your childhood and family history
  • Your current social circumstances
  • What you would like support with

You are welcome to email the letter to me at kontakt@linejuby.dk before our first meeting.

For some people, writing can be a supportive reflective exercise that helps put words to things that might otherwise be difficult to express during a conversation. For others, it may feel overwhelming, daunting, or simply not right for them.

Take a moment to consider what might feel helpful for you. The letter is an invitation, not a requirement. Therapy always begins with you and respects your boundaries.

One Step at a Time

Beginning therapy is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. It reflects a willingness to take responsibility for yourself and your life. Whether or not you feel ready, taking that first step can be the beginning of a more compassionate, honest, and integrated relationship with yourself.

I look forward to meeting you.
